Drink tea and eat cake to help fight mito!

This May, we’re encouraging all our supporters to help fight mito by hosting a tea and cake event – introducing The Lily Foundation’s Mito Communi-TEA party!

Our official event will take place on Friday 17th May, but you can host yours whenever you like. Wherever you host it, and whoever you invite, every penny you raise will go towards improving the lives of everyone affected by mito.

You could hold it at home, at school, in your workplace or a community centre – even on the village green, weather permitting. How about taking over the local WI meeting, or going on the road to a Parkrun or village fête?

Just imagine the tasty treats you could serve – think platters of sandwiches cut into delicate triangles, freshly baked scones and a Victoria sponge or traditional trifle centrepiece?

Why not share the baking and add in a bit of friendly rivalry by awarding rosettes to the best bakers and wooden spoons for, well, effort! Or get local crafters involved by offering pottery painting or creative crocheting of tea cosies and coasters.

Of course, there’ll be cups of tea aplenty, but you might even want to throw in a bottle or two of bubbles to give the occasion an air of sophistication.

You don’t even have to go for tea and cake – you could barbecue a batch of burgers or sizzle up some sausages; serve with chilled beers or classy cocktails for an al fresco alternative.

Throwing a Lily fundraiser is a lovely opportunity to get together with friends and family, but it’s also a great way to spread the word to colleagues or neighbours about the work we do and the patients we support.

To help you host your event we’ll send you a fundraising kit filled with balloons, cake toppers and labels, sandwich flags and a recipe for cute butterfly buns to get you started.

If you’re looking for more baking inspiration, why not try our recipes for moreish mito biscuits or an irresistible chocolate cake that everyone can enjoy.

And a big thank you to adult mito warrior James, who has very kindly provided a couple of recipes for us from his book, Baking Blind. How about Superb Buns or Banana Bread Loaf, both really easy to make but absolutely delicious! James is partially sighted due to LHON (a form of mito).

Sign up today to host your own Mito Communi-TEA party and help make a difference to everyone living with mitochondrial disease.

Our official event is sponsored by Bath-based Simply Ceylon, stockists of one of the widest ranges of specially selected, high quality, single-estate teas in the UK.

Making the leap into fundraising

If you’d like to take part in a fundraising challenge but you’re not sure where to start, read Sarah’s story. What began as a simple birthday fundraiser ended up with a leap from a plane and a grand total of over £20,000 raised in the fight against mitochondrial disease.

Raising money for charity isn’t as hard as you might think, especially when you have a strong community around you who are happy to sponsor you and spread the word about your challenge. So make that leap – sign up today to support The Lily Foundation and be part of something really special.
